This cumulative dissertation examines the corporation as a political actor, exploring its political-economic and political-societal roles across four research manuscripts. Drawing on the literature on corporate political activity (CPA) and political corporate social responsibility (PCSR), it investigates this dual role by examining the intricate interplay between politics, corporate responsibilities, and economic objectives. The first two manuscripts scrutinize the motivations and influences compelling companies to actively participate in their political–societal role. Specifically, these manuscripts provide initial empirical evidence on specific political activities undertaken by companies to promote democratic values in populist settings. The second set of manuscripts addresses research gaps within the realm of their political–economic role, exploring how political capabilities influence corporate performance metrics, with a focus on innovation inputs and financial performance. The findings highlight the positive impact of political capabilities on innovation inputs and firm performance. Overall, these results provide valuable empirically-based insights for a more differentiated understanding of the political dual role within the corporate political actor view.
